InterActive Lesson Book:Chapter 11-Thinking First to Make the Best Choices-Download and Print
“Thinking First To Make The Best Choices” is Chapter 11 of the InterActive Lesson Book for Herb Hein’s Growing G.R.E.E.N. InterActions Social Literacy Program. This is an extremely important chapter for guiding participants to Think First instead of acting in an impulsive manner, especially in regards to how they interact with other people. They learn they can use their powerful brains to think of the positive vs. negative consequences of any action not only for themselves, but for the other people they are with (their Teams). Through lessons and exercises, they learn to think about whether their action is positive, helpful and G.R.E.E.N. or negative and Rude, Egocentric and Disruptive (R.E.D.). They learn their brain allows them to have transformative, self-control of their own behavior. They are guided to use a structured, decision-making tool such as the Civilized Choice Checker to help them evaluate which of two action choices is more logical, safe, and good for everyone. Participants are explicitly taught what all of these terms mean, and are provided with contrasting statements and scenarios to learn and discuss why one behavior could be considered G.R.E.E.N. and the other R.E.D.
For distance learning it is possible to screen share the numerous exercises in this chapter and annotate them with the collaborative responses generated with the guide and the participant(s). This chapter also provides the visual strategy Wise Action Tool called the Civilized Choice Checker that can be used to evaluate Choice A vs. Choice B to see which one “wins’ as the best choice. It includes the lyrics for the song “What’s Best for the Team?”
This is only one of the chapters of the book which can be downloaded in its entirety for only $45 to increase grateful, respectful, empathetic, cooperative and navigating behavior and interactions in the home, classroom or community. Chapter 11 includes the following sections:
